In March 1964, as a student at King's College, Cambridge, John Eliot Gardiner led a performance of Monteverdi's Vespers that not only launched his career as a conductor, but also provided the impetus to create his world-renowned Monteverdi Choir. In 1989, to mark the Monteverdi Choir's 25th anniversary, he made the legendary live recording in St. Mark's, Venice (where Monteverdi had held the position of maestro di cappella), which is represented in this deluxe hardback edition. This performance was also filmed by the BBC, and is included alongside the CDs.

"An atmospheric and distinctive performance beautifully accommodated to its deluxe setting … a gloriously public Vespers, and thoroughly Venetian for that." Gramophone

"This large-scale live recording (Gardiner's second) was made in Venice's St Mark's Basilica. It captures the drama as well as the ceremonial aspect of the work, despite sometimes cloudy recorded sound." Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

"Gardiner's second [recording of the Vespers], spectacularly recorded live in St Mark's, has a punchy choral sound, near-operatic solo singing (Bryn Terfel and Alistair Miles are among the basses), emphatic enunciation, big contrasts and deliberate exploitation of the building's spaces. Its outright theatricality sets it apart from other performances." Gramophone Magazine, June 2010
