Mari Samuelsen grew up in Hamar, Norway, and began playing violin at age three at a local music school outside the city. By age four, she became a student of violinist Arve Tellefsen, who has called Mari and Håkon "among the greatest string music talents in Norway". She studied with Tellefsen in Oslo, and played with him for almost 10 years.
She has enjoyed a remarkable rise on the international concert stage through a characteristic mixture of artistry and enterprise. Her concerts combine breathtaking musical virtuosity and an imaginative and innovative approach to presentation. In her magical debut album for DG she plays Bach and Glass, Max Richter and Peter Gregson, Brian Eno and Arvo Pärt.
"The emotional core of what in the 1970s would have been called a 'concept album' is a gripping performance of Bach's epic D minor Chaconne…in which Samuelsen exchanges the dogged intensity of traditional readings for a radiant eloquence that traces the music's emotional peaks and troughs with a compelling sense of inevitability." - BBC Music Magazine
