Praised for his "smooth, rich and sweet sound and impeccable virtuosity", guitarist Thibaut Garcia releases his second album on Erato, a recital of works composed and inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach.

"Bach has been part of my life as a musician since the very start," he says. Taking Bach's mighty Chaconne as his centrepiece, he ranges wide: from Gounod's much-loved 'Ave Maria' and Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras No 5 to music by Agustín Barrios Mangoré, Alexandre Tansman and the contemporary Serbian-American composer Dušan Bogdanović.

"Ever since the days of Andrés Segovia, albums related to Bach's music have come along often enough. This entry by the young French guitarist Thibaut Garcia has much to recommend it, and indeed Segovia seems to have exerted a strong influence on Garcia's tone, self-possessed but sensuous. It doesn't get any better than the opening La catedral of Paraguayan composer Agustín Barrios, whose music is thankfully becoming more widely exposed: Garcia is arresting here. He's also very strong in his duets with soprano Elsa Dreisig...Erato's engineers, working in the Salle des concerts de Arras, achieve superb results, and the little-heralded Orchestre Nationale de Montpellier Occitane enters into the spirit of the thing. Photogenic, talented, and original, Garcia is plainly a young guitarist to watch." AllMusic.com

"In his flowing, pellucid interpretations Garcia himself seems to be inspired by Bach's name, and throughout much of the programme there's a compelling tension between the rippling enunciation of lighter paragraphs and the precipitous propulsion of more dramatic passages. This is most obvious in Garcia's thrilling, magisterial performance of Bach's D minor Chaconne." Gramophone Editor's Choice December 2018
