A superb recording of pure, sincere music that has stood the test of time.
Tunnel Of Love' is a most under-rated album, released as it was in 1987, after the huge success of 'Born In The U.S.A.'. It certainly stands up to repeat listening - perhaps more so than any other title in the extensive Springsteen catalogue.
For the first time, it shows Bruce offering a mature, introverted, lyrical study of the intricacies of love. At the time Springsteen was going through a difficult time in his personal life and his thoughts are reflected in the words, as he explores romance, trust and honesty. Many of the songs express feelings of loss, confusion and hurt, presented by Springsteen in a heartbreakingly beautiful way.
A stripped down E-Street Band is impressive as ever, taking a more subtle approach than the style found on 'Born In The U.S.A.'. The emotive, restrained style of 'Tunnel Of Love' meant that it wasn't the mainstream hit that Bruce could have easily produced at the time (it sold a mere 3 million copies!). However, it was the album he simply had to make and it is a superb recording of pure, sincere music from one of the greatest singer / songwriters of our time… and 'Tunnel Of Love' has stood the test of time very well.
