Emmerich Kálmán's music fuses Hungarian folk melodies and the Viennese waltz, displaying operatic and melodramatic elements, and illustrating the "American dance" style of the time. It also offers exotic tonal colours like those of the tárogató, and rhythms designed to evoke faraway climes. This work numbers among the highlights in Kálmán's operetta oeuvre. In 2014 the WDR presented a concert performance of The Bayadere and then went on to produce this work in the studio. We are happy and proud now to be able to release this benchmark production on cpo.
"It's dazzingly lavish, cosmopolitan entertainment, and more. Some numbers have real edge, foreshadowing the Musiktheater style of the composer's friend Kurt Weill. This is Richard Bonynge's third full length Kalman set, and under his sure-handed, surprisingly intense direction, singers and orchestra have a good go at getting under the work's surface." Opera
"A wholly charming operetta excellently performed. Not to be missed by operetta lovers!" MusicWeb
