Piano virtuoso John Ogdon II cannot be explained simply. He cut his own path in the rigid world of concert professionals. He neither shunned the standard repertoire, nor limited himself to it. In a field of specialists, he enthusiastically embraced a variety of styles, putting together concert programs of physically challenging Romantic pieces and technically complex 20th-century compositions. He was his own man, and worked hard, performing as many as 200 concert dates annually.
Ogdon's technical skill made him an inspired interpreter of Rachmaninov. His ability to make sense of the labyrinthian passages--balancing power and agility--made him a legend before he reached the age of 30. The etudes and preludes found on the first disc of this collection thunder with his physical presence as well as his interpretive abilities.
Whereas first CD highlights his power, profiles lyrical side. Liszt shimmers, while still clearly defined by Ogdon's extraordinary proficiency.
NOTE: This CD has now been discontinued by Hyperion and is now very rare.
