Over the years Mtendere Mandowa, more commonly known as Teebs, has established himself as a consummate artist. Layered and endlessly lush, Teebs' music speaks to the mind and body in a hyperreal way that ultimately leaves one curious, perplexed, and relaxed all at the same time.
With roots at the My Hollow Drum collective, dublab and Low End Theory, Teebs has undoubtedly inspired many new sounds that continue to evolve from LA and beyond. "My creative family in LA is so important," he explains. "It's a part of who I am when I step outside and how others in LA view me. I love the feeling of community and trying to understand how I can be useful in it."
· He is also one half of Sons Of The Morning with fellow beat pioneer Prefuse 73.
Where many of his labelmates at Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder favour maximal production and busy textures, Mandowa's music stands out for its restraint. Anicca is an intimate and personal collection on which Teebs reaches into the annals of spiritual and new age music for inspiration. Constructed from a small set of instruments that includes a seprewa (a Ghanaian harp-lute), Teebs' beats here lilt gracefully in a manner that recalls windchimes jangling on a porch. If Alice Coltrane were working today she might come up with something like Anicca.
With the help of a host of musical friends including Mndsgn, Panda Bear (Animal Collective) and Sudan Archives, Anicca fuses Teebs' signature bright and fluid productions with the colourful and grounded elements of his collaborators, an intriguing development from previous Teebs albums.
