Jacques Greene's evocative Dawn Chorus captures what it's like to stay up and see the sun rise.
Jacques Greene's second album Dawn Chorus is a bold step forward, and his most collaborative project to date. Contributors to the album include Julianna Barwick, Clams Casino, cellist Oliver Coates and film composer Brian Reitzell (Lost in Translation).
Greene has been making music "about the club" for over a decade. His sound could be described as an emotional haze, in that its balance of sonic elements work to illuminate the overlapping feelings that lie between the familiar binaries.
Even by the standards of a producer who has built his empire on expansive, widescreen club tracks, Dawn Chorus is a lush listen. If the Canadian artist's 2017 debut album Feel Infinite was designed to capture the excitement of the start of the night out - amping you up to lose yourself in the club - then Dawn Chorus resides in the post-rave reflective moment. A time of heightened sensuality and latent possibility. Halcyon synths, half-remembered beats and a warm jumble of rave memories all combine for a hazy delight of an album.
This isn't to say that Dawn Chorus doesn't bring the heaters. Greene's ability to create soulful DJ tools remains unparalleled. Once again Greene moves through a wide range of styles - slow house rollers, trap styled club traxx, organic rhythm pieces reminiscent of Gold Panda - and succeeds at everything he turns his hand to.
Dawn Chorus opens with Serenity, a breaks tune that Greene describes as "a weird, euphoric take on Chemical Brothers." Lead single Night Service is a neon lit hip house anthem helmed by Canadian rapper Cadence Weapon, who drapes a love letter to the club around Greene's acid dipped synths.
