The Gates

The Gates was the last large-scale collaboration between the successful artist couple Christo (1935- 2020) and Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009). For 16 days in February 2005 they transformed New York's Central Park into a fairytale landscape of light and colour. Pieces of deep saffron-coloured fabric hung on 7503 'gates' along 37 kilometres of pathway. Christo und Jeanne-Claude had been fighting to realise The Gates since 1979.

Albert Maysles and Antonio Ferrera accompanied the long, often difficult process with film cameras. Their unique footage documents this extraordinary achievement of the charismatic artistic duo, which goes far beyond the realms of the artistic.
