"Harnoncourt is, on balance, an unlikely conductor for this repertoire..Not surprisingly he uses an authentic text but is eccentric in including four monologues instead of spoken dialogue...the cast is strong too, with Marjana Lipovtek's Orlovsky particularly impressive. Perhaps Edita Gruberovã brings more drama than charm to the role of Rosalinde but the men, including Josef Protschka as Alfred, are very good and so are the lively Netherlands Opera Chorus and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. I enjoyed this disc a great deal, for the digital sound sparkles."
