On June 25, 1961, the Bill Evans Trio recorded one of their performances at the celebrated Village Vanguard jazz club in New York. At that time, the trio consisted of Evans, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Paul Motian on drums. This formation is considered the best of the pianist's trios, and one of the best trios in jazz history. A highly praised virtuoso on his instrument, LaFaro would die in a car accident soon after on July 6, 1961, at the tender age of 25.
Most of the pieces recorded at the Vanguard were issued on two highly successful albums: Sunday at the Village Vanguard, and the one presented here, Waltz for Debby. Ten tracks from Evans' debut album as a trio, New Jazz Conceptions, including unaccompanied piano performances of two songs from our primary album, "My Romance" and the title tune, have been added as a bonus.
