Kurt Masur's achievement is defined above all by his relationships with two orchestras exemplifying vastly different traditions. Having spent some 20 years as Kapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, which traces its roots to the 15th century, he became the transformational music director of the New York Philharmonic, an embodiment of the New World. Through all this, his musical integrity remained consistent. As the New York Times wrote: "He brought to the podium the ardent conviction that music-making was a moral act that could heal the world." Masur himself put things more simply: "My goal is meaningful playing ... What counts is to be able to communicate the composer's meaning to the audience ... When I conduct Beethoven, I wouldn't like to replace Beethoven. He should be in your mind, not me." This 70CD set consolidates the entirety of the catalogues that Masur built for EMI and Teldec between 1974 and 2009.

"If you want to hear the Prokofiev piano concertos with near perfect balance between soloist and an orchestra on top form under a conductor's conductor, Kurt Masur, then this EMI Gemini is for you." (MusicWeb on the Prokofiev)

"Sarah Chang has always shown excellent judgement in choosing orchestral partners for her concerto recordings. These versions of the Bruch and Brahms are no exception, the Dresden Philharmonic under Kurt Masur producing an oak-veneered sound that provides an almost ideal backcloth for Chang's powerfully projected playing." (Classical-Music.com on the Sarah Chang)

"Kurt Masur brings both to harrowing life: the massive death-chord as Jack the Ripper kills Lulu is one of the most terrifying things you'll ever hear, while the mannered delivery of Angelina Réaux...in The Seven Deadly Sins is well matched by the leering, descriptive enthusiasm of the orchestra" (Independent on the Weill/Berg)

"Masur (knows) the scores inside out and how to make every note count, plus the Gewandhaus, Mendelssohn's old orchestra, plays with consummate dedication." (AllMusic.com on the Mendelssohn)

"Lively, affectionate and perceptive, Masur is both sensitive to detail and careful to maintain impetus" (BBC Music Magazine on the Tchaikovsky)

"A praiseworthy and committed Schumann cycle from Kurt Masur. These are expert, alert and, above all, caring performances; Masur addresses the familiar obstacles of Schumann's unjustly maligned orchestration in microscopic detail, and the results are self-recommending." (ClassicalMusic.com on the Schumann)
