The Summer Night Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic is the world's biggest annual classical open-air concert that takes place in the magical setting of the Schönbrunn Palace Baroque Park in Vienna. This is the tenth release in the series.
"This year we have chosen a European musical programme that emphasises our common European musical heritage with its diverse facets and rich musical traditions. In consultation with Maestro Nelsons, a composition by the contemporary Latvian composer Arturs Maskats...performed for the first time, as well as a work of Mykola Lysenko, a prominent individual in the musical history of Ukraine." - Daniel Froschauer, Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic
The programme of the Summer Night Concert 2022 also includes musical favourites from Beethoven and Rossini to Smetana and Dvořák. The soloist is the French cellist Gautier Capuçon, who performs Camille Saint-Säens' Concerto for Violoncello No. 1, op. 33. Gautier Capuçon is a true 21st-century ambassador for the cello.
The conductor of this year's concert is Maestro Andris Nelsons, Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Gewandhauskapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. These two positions, in addition to his leadership of a pioneering alliance between both institutions, have firmly established Grammy Award-winning Nelsons as one of the most renowned and innovative conductors on the international scene today.
For both Andris Nelsons and Gautier Capuçon this is their summer night concert premiere.
