1001 Classical recordings to hear before you die (1801-1850)
"András Schiff plays the concertos marvellously, with poetry, great delicacy and fluency, while his virtuosity is effortless. He is given excellent accompaniments by Dutoit and the Bavarian players, and the Decca recording is first class" Penguin CD Guide
Although Mendelssohn was able to play the violin (his Violin Concerto is undoubtedly his most famous work), his chief instruments were the piano and the organ. During his early years, Mendelssohn composed a number of concertos, for one or two pianos, for himself to play. The two most important of these are the two on this disc - Mendelssohn was the soloist for the premieres of both of these concertos (in 1831 and 1837).
Piano Concerto No.1 in G minor, Op. 25
Piano Concerto No.2 in D minor, Op. 40
