The world famous Glasgow Phoenix Choir provide these songs of praise and inspiration from the remote island of Iona, off the west coast of Mull, Scotland. Iona is credited with being the launch point of Christianity into Scotland. The tiny 1800 acre island has a special significance for all Christians and Iona Abbey, is visited by pilgrims from all over the world.
Making a recording in one of the remotest parts of Scotland with a touring party of over 100 singers and support is not easy. This recording was made possible with the kind co-operation of Historic Scotland, their Iona staff and manager, Jane Martin who literally moved heaven and earth to allow us to make this very special live recording.
The Glasgow Phoenix Choir rose out of the ashes of the world-famous Glasgow Orpheus Choir when that choir disbanded in 1951 after 50 years of choral excellence. Eighty-three members of the Orpheus who wished to continue as choristers founded the Phoenix and thus continued the excellent traditions for which its predecessor was deservedly known. Since then the Phoenix has been at the forefront of choral music in Scotland and beyond. The Choir gives concerts twice a year in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, in April and at Christmas, and visits towns and cities all over the UK Other than Glasgow, one place (Newcastle) has held an annual concert every year since the Choir's foundation, the only city to do so. This is thanks to the energetic local committee, helped by sponsorship from Newcastle Brewers. By their efforts they almost fill the City Hall, annually where the Choir's loyal following makes an annual pilgrimage.
