Garry Spry; "In May 1967, after returning from six months in the U.K with the Twilights, who I was managing, I was approached by keyboardist extraordinaire Tweed Harris who had just left 'The Clefs'. Tweed wanted me to start a new band for him. Having seen the rise of two super groups in the UK 'Cream' and 'Traffic', I set about doing the same in Australia. We recruited Rod Stone, lead guitarist with The 'Librettos' and 'The Playboys', who was between jobs. We quickly recruited drummer Geoff Bridgford, from 'Steve and the Board' and then Jamie Byrne, the bassist with 'Running Jumping Standing Still'. I heard that Peter Williams had just left 'Max Merritt & His Meteors' and I quickly snaffled him as the lead singer", and so was born 'The Groove' - Australia's first Supergroup.
'The Groove' quickly established themselves as one of the top Australian groups during their 3 year career on the back of six hit singles, all of which are featured on this collection. They won the prestigious Hoadley's Battle of the Sounds in 1968 by beating the 'Masters Apprentice' and 'Doug Parkinson In Focus'. To cap off a successful year they were voted the third best Australian band in the national Go-Set readers poll behind 'The Twilights' and 'Masters Apprentice's'. Mid 1969 saw the group in the UK, and while the future looked promising wider success eventually alluded them. They were paid the ultimate compliment by Chas Chandler who was looking for a new act to replace Jimi Hendrik who he managed before his then recent death " You guys are F#*>kin Bloody Brilliant, what are you doin' for management" but his offer was too late, they were in the final stages of breaking up.
