Was it really 14 years ago that AVID released a title on their West End Essential series Essential Doo Wop? It was a super compilation covering most Doo Wop bases, perhaps concentrating on the more fun upbeat side than the more smooth vocal style of some of the groups who emerged from the gospel and vocal backgrounds. Now deleted from our catalogue but still available if you check out your fave website. Here's what we wrote back then. "Emerging from the streets of America's north eastern cities such as New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Baltimore, Doo Wop took it's roots primarily from Blues and R&B to create an accessible vocal style which came closest to the mainstream pop style of the 1950s. So here we are in 2024 and we love Doo Wop as much now as then. And here's the lowdown on this new release. We've taken four of the best known Doo Wop groups from the more vocal soul and gospel side of Doo Wop and dug out their long lost gems from the dusty R&B files. To name check the bands here, we present:- The Flamingos - formed in 1953, R&R Hall of Fame 2004, number 158 Rolling Stone Top 500 songs of all time with I Only Have Eyes For You. Main men Jacob Carey, Ezekiel Carey. The Five Satins - formed 1952 In The Still Of The Night a million seller 1956. Main man Fred Parris, wrote many of their hits and was in and out of the band all his musical life. The Spaniels - formed in 1952 as Pookie & The Hudsonaires. Main man Thornton "Pookie" Hudson, wrote many of their hits including Goodnite Sweetheart. The Spaniels thought to be the first of the vocal bands to use a separate mic for the lead singer and the backing vocalists. Career got a big boost after the movies American Graffiti and Three Men And A Baby! The 5 Royales - formed in the early fifties and thought to be an important link between R&B, Gospel Soul and R&Roll. Main man Lowman Pauling who again wrote many of their hits and others. R&Roll Hall Of Fame 2015.
