This new recording of Paul Hindemith's complete works for flute, featuring Stathis Karapanos and an impressive array of supporting musicians, shows his versatility as a composer. He wrote a sonata for almost every instrument of the orchestra as well as solo concertos for some of them. He succeeded in optimally exploiting the qualities of each instrument both in sound and technique because he himself had a command, in some cases at a considerable level, of almost all of them. Along with compositions for professional flautists, Hindemith also wrote works for children and adult amateurs in which the flute assumes a leading role.
The Tapiola Sinfonietta play admirably well under Janne Nisonen, empowering the music to speak for itself. It's a fascinating portrait of what else was going on in Vienna in Beethoven's orbit and thus valuable on its own terms. - Gramophone
