Jia Daqun, one of China's most prolific and respected composers, has written in many forms, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music and song cycles. The symphonic four-concerto cycle, Impressions of Liyuan, is one of his major pieces. It is written for Chinese percussion, bamboo flute, the erhu and suona, with a large symphony orchestra. It offers an evocative aural landscape fusing Western styles with the traditional characteristics of Chinese opera, framed in a contemporary context.
Jia Daqun celebrates his 70th birthday in 2025. This release marks the world-premiere recording of his symphonic concerto cycle. His composition The Wave of Surging Thoughts can be found on 8579157, while Vol.1 in the Daqun chamber series was released on 970241, and Volume 2 on 8579011.
Daqun is widely recognised for composing The Prospect of Coloured Desert in 2000 for the world-famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, a piece that earned him international acclaim. His music is frequently performed across China, Japan, Europe, and the United States. Additionally, his composition Flavor of Bashu was named a 'Chinese Classic Musical Composition of the Twentieth Century' by the Chinese government.
