Mahler began his First Symphony in 1884, and struggled with it for several years before finishing it off in a burst four years later, in 1888. Its difficult genesis was reflected in the problems he had in deciding on the final structure, and indeed its title. The "Blumine" movement is restored to its original position as the second movement in this recording
