Overtures from the British Isles: Volume 3
BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Rumon Gamba (conductor)

[ Chandos / CD ]

Release Date: Friday 20 February 2026

Rumon Gamba directs the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra on the third instalment of his exploration of Overtures from the British Isles. As in the case of the previous volumes, the recorded repertoire is rarely played, and the album includes three world première recordings. All the works were composed in a period of eleven years, between 1938 and 1949, against the background of the horrific world events of that era. Presenting an eclectic mix of musical styles, the album, like its predecessors, sheds light on some wonderful discoveries, passionately and enthusiastically performed by orchestra and conductor.

"the musical contents are very entertaining and the performances are top-drawer, offering yet more proof of the skill and versatility of the BBC Philharmonic. Rumon Gamba is ideally suited to music such as this; the music fizzes. The performances have been captured in vivid, impactful sound." MusicWeb

"What an unalloyed joy this new Chandos album is! The first of the series to be recorded with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra." Gramophone
