This album features Marios Papadopoulos performing Beethoven's three Piano Sonatas, Op. 2 Nos. 1-3, first published in 1796 and dedicated to Joseph Haydn. Marking the beginning of Beethoven's celebrated cycle of 32 sonatas, these works demonstrate his early independence, expanding the traditional three-movement form to four and developing motifs with striking economy and tension. The F minor Sonata is concise and dramatic; the A major combines lyricism with structural breadth; and the C major is notably expansive, with concerto-like elements. Recorded in 1995 on a Steinway, this album continues Papadopoulos's Beethoven sonata cycle re-release series with Signum Records.
