Carafa: Masaniello

Michele Carafa, a student of Cherubini, formed a lifelong friendship with Rossini built on mutual admiration. He established his career in Paris through his association with the Opéra Comique, where he presented his masterpiece Masaniello. Uniquely, Carafa was a descendant of figures portrayed in his own opera, which draws on real revolutionary events that took place in 17th‑century Naples. The result is a well‑paced historical drama that aligns more closely with French operatic models, relying less on bel canto and only lightly reflecting Rossini's influence.
