[ Erato / CD ]
Release Date: Friday 25 September 2026
The music of Alexandre Tharaud's native France has always held a special place in his repertoire and his Erato discography. His latest album, Mémoire, presents a meticulously conceived programme of 27 short pieces by 27 different French composers. Ranging from 'greatest hits' by Debussy, Ravel, Satie and Fauré to rare gems by composers hardly known outside France, they run in broadly chronological order, spanning the eras from the Baroque to the latter 20th century. For Tharaud, conceiving the programme for Mémoire was like assembling a bouquet. "It's not so much about putting together flowers that outdo each other in beauty, but about finding flowers that are different and complementary." Shifting analogies, he explains that "French music is both champagne and the kind of rough red wine that leaves stains … both foie gras on toast and a baguette filled with ham … both Versailles and Pigalle." On a personal level, Tharaud has direct or indirect connections to a number of composers who feature on Mémoire. At the age of 11 he became friendly with Madeleine Milhaud, the widow of Darius Milhaud (who died in 1974). Then nearing the age of 80, she reminisced to him about such figures as Debussy, Ravel, Satie and Poulenc. Composers Tharaud encountered directly as a young pianist included Germaine Tailleferre, Jean Françaix, Jean-Michel Damase, Jean Wiéner and, during his time at the Paris Conservatoire, Jeanine Rueff and Marcel Bitsch. Composers from further in the past whose music appears on the album include Lili Boulanger, Bizet, Chabrier, Couperin, Delibes, Gounod, Hahn, Massenet, Messager and Saint-Saëns.
"Back in the day when the LP format appeared on the scene, labels were eager to exploit its playing potential. As far as solo instrumentalists were concerned, instead of two pieces of roughly four and a half minutes, one each side, a single disc could now accommodate seven, eight or more titles on each side. A plethora of 'Great Piano Classics' and 'These You Have Loved' albums became firm favourites and introduced many of us to the representative repertoire of the artists involved.
Alexandre Tharaud's 'Mémoire' is a direct descendant of these - albeit of a very superior kind. The choice of music, Tharaud's playing and the recorded sound are out of the top drawer. Indeed, the whole album is a real treat. What adds to the delight - something with which even the likes of Hamelin and Hough in their similarly unmissable 'encore' albums cannot compete (Hough's most recent, 'Piano Postcards', 8/26) - is that Tharaud has a personal connection to many of the composers. Through his friendship with Madeleine Milhaud (widow of Darius), he heard about the composers she had met - Debussy, Ravel, Satie and Poulenc. He himself recalls encounters with Wiéner, Françaix, Damase, Tailleferre and Marcel Bitsch, while contributing his own transcriptions of the Waltz from Delibes's Coppélia, 'Le jardin féerique' from Ravel's Ma Mère l'Oye and Fauré's Cantique de Jean Racine.
A vast range of composers, many represented by short works, but what unites them all is the care and devotion, plus engaging charm, with which Alexandre Tharaud presents them on this joyfully personal album." Gramophone Editor's Choice Oct 26
