The Hustler (1974) captures The Human Instinct in their later, more eclectic phase, blending blues‑rock, hard rock and psychedelic touches with a loose, concept‑like flow. Originally released on Zodiac Records, the album moves between gritty riffs, swaggering rock narratives and atmospheric detours, driven by Maurice Greer and a rotating cast of guitarists including Glenn Mikkelson, John Donoghue and Martin Hope.
The record is split into two themed sides (1934 and 1974), mixing original material with select covers, and packaged at the time with a laminated sleeve and lyric booklet. Though less heavy than their early psych classics, The Hustler remains a distinctive entry in the band's catalogue - an adventurous snapshot of New Zealand rock in the mid‑70s
