Following their critically acclaimed first album devoted to Felix Mendelssohn's Symphonies Nos. 3 & 5 (Trophées Radio Classique, Amadeus d'oro, among many accolades), conductor Maxim Emelyanychev and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra have recorded a second volume comprising three works inspired by the composer's literary passions.
Starting with the evergreen Hebrides Overture - the result of Mendelssohn's devotion to Sir Walter Scott that led to a trip to Scotland - the programme continues with the Goethe-inspired Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture and ends with the Shakespearean incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, featuring vocalists Hilary Cronin, Rowan Pierce and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus.
Suffused with magic and mystery, A Midsummer Night's Dream includes arguably the world's most famous tune: the 'Wedding March'. This album adds another layer to a partnership that has grown steadily stronger over the years and is set to continue into the next decade.
