Pleyel: String Trios, Ben. 401-403

Ignaz Pleyel, a distinguished pupil of Haydn, became arguably the most popular composer in Europe during the early 19th century, with his music published, republished and widely pirated across the continent. His String Trios and Duos reveal the subtlety of his motivic craftsmanship, a rich palette of contrasts, and unexpected harmonic or thematic turns that both surprise and delight.

Pleyel also breaks from convention by liberating the cello from its traditional basso role, giving it greater independence and expressive weight. Throughout these works, his use of gentle chromatic inflection and his freshness of invention demonstrate a composer at the height of his mastery.
