Elliott Smith released his fourth studio album, XO, in 1998. Co-produced by Tom Rothrock of Bong Load Records, the album was recorded over 1997-1998 and officially released on August 25, 1998.
XO marks a departure from Elliott Smith's indie roots, as he embraces a more lush and fully instrumental sound. With rich layers of instrumentation, vocal arrangements, and piano accompaniments, Smith elevates his songwriting to new heights, complementing his gentle voice and country-tinged guitar playing.
The album features nods to classic rock influences, evident in tracks like the Beatlesque "Baby Britain" and the Beach Boys-inspired "I Didn't Understand." However, Smith seamlessly incorporates these influences into his own unique style, rather than imitating them.
