In 1911, despite being terminally ill with tuberculosis, the composer Gabriel Dupont completed his Poème for piano and string quartet. Dedicated to his teacher Widor, this vibrant work follows in the tradition of César Franck. Acclaimed by critics at its premiere, the work made a profound impression on his contemporaries. In 1917, Gabriel Pierné in turn composed a Quintet for Piano and Strings in the same Franckian tradition. Dedicated to Fauré, this major work, written during the war, emphasises French aesthetic and popular continuity. Now largely forgotten, these two quintets deserve to be rediscovered as little-known gems of the early 20th-century repertoire. Syntonia, the only piano quintet ensemble formed in France, has championed these rarities since its formation in 1999. Its members - violinists Stéphanie Moraly and Thibault Noally, violist Caroline Donin, cellist Patrick Langot and pianist Romain David - are committed to combining essential masterpieces with the (re)discovery of hidden treasures of chamber music, as demonstrated by this recording.
