Among Mstislav Rostropovich's many achievements was his enrichment of the cello repertoire. His passion for the music of his own time encouraged composers to create many dozens of works for him to perform. The two concertos on this disc, by Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) and Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994), are both modern classics, reflecting Rostropovich's spirit as they push the boundaries of instrumental possibility while exciting and challenging the audience.
Mstislav Rostropovich passed away on Friday April 27th 2007 aged 80. Rostropovich was one of the truly charismatic artists of our age.
Lutoslawski wrote his cello concerto in response to a commission from Rostropovich, who premiered the work in London in 1970. In this 1975 recording, the composer's direction of the accompaniment is grippingly authoritative. Dutilleux also had Rostropovich in mind when he wrote his Cello Concerto, on which he worked between 1967 and 1970. The work, subtitled 'Tout un monde lointain' ('A whole distant world'), was inspired by the poetry of Baudelaire. This vivid recording of two imaginative and colourful scores, performed with incredible virtuosity and feeling by Rostropovich, has won many international prizes, and it also earned for Dutilleux the 1976 Koussevitsky Award.
