'There is plenty to delight ear here, in the delicate dances and variations of the Suite No. 3, in the dramatic vigour of the introduction to the opera Nal and Damayanti, and in the charming little Intermezzo.'
- The Telegraph
The Russian composer, conductor and pianist Arensky was a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov at St Petersburg Conservatory and later taught at the Moscow Conservatory, where his pupils included Rachmaninov and Scriabin. His music is an eclectic blend of Russian idiom and late romantic tradition.
Vassily Sinaisky is a master of this repertoire and has made a string of recordings of Russian music with the BBC Philharmonic, all of which have received tremendous critical acclaim.
This CD presents some of Arensky's finest orchestral works and is thus a good introduction to the composer.
REVIEWS ON OTHER BBC PHILHARMONIC CDs:
'Fine playing and luxurious recording… such is the class of the BBC Philharmonic's principal guest conductor that by the end of the disc I felt that I had at least been shown facets of his [Kabalevsky's] art that I had never before appreciated.'
Gramophone 'Editor's Choice' on CHAN 10052 (Kabalevsky)
'Sinaisky elicits lovable phrasing from the BBC Philharmonic… Yet another testament, then, to the right team for Chandos to use in its extensive Russian repertoire.'
