NZ Maori Music Award winner, Whirimako's third album (originally released in 2004) is an intimate recording accompanied by brilliant acoustic guitarist Joel Haines and traditional Maori instruments. Last copies in existence new /missing rear booklet
'Tangihaku' was originally released in 2004 and earned Whirimako a selection as a finalist in the annual TUI Awards and in a rare achievement, two out of the three compositions selected for the finals of the 2004 APRA Silver Scroll Awards in the te reo category came from this one album.
On 'Tangihaku', Whirimako's third album, she presents an intimate recording accompanied by brilliant acoustic guitarist Joel Haines and taonga puoro (traditional Maori instruments) played by her long-time collaborator Justin Kereama.
Produced by Chris Macro (producer of both Katchafire albums), the album comprises a collection of poems written by Whirimako's mother Anituatua Black and her sister Rangitunoa Black, set to music composed by Whirimako and Rangitunoa and arranged by Joel Haines.
The concept behind 'Tangihaku' involves taking the listener on an inspirational 'musical journey' into the Urewera ranges. The instrumentation and arrangement is consciously sparse and ambient, allowing the exquisite sound of Whirimako's rich and evocative vocals to flow around very note.
