"If you somehow haven't yet heard Andreas Scholl, don't hesitate to begin here; without doubt the rest of his recordings will soon find their way into your library. Scholl's existing fans will need no encouragement! Highly recommended."

"As impressive as he is in such repertoire as the virtuoso arias of Vivaldi and Handel, it's in these lute and consort songs (and elsewhere in folksongs) that Andreas Scholl reveals the full depth and range of his voice and artistry. Scholl receives excellent accompaniment from the viol consort Concerto di Viole and from lutenist Julian Behr, who also treat us to several instrumental selections among the generous program's 21 tracks and nearly 80 minutes of music. If you somehow haven't yet heard Andreas Scholl, don't hesitate to begin here; without doubt the rest of his recordings will soon find their way into your library. Scholl's existing fans will need no encouragement! Highly recommended."

There are few pleasures more delightful than musical melancholy, especially when it flows from the pen of the finest Elizabethan poets and a composer whose name will be forever associated with that emotion: John Dowland. His lute songs and consort songs form the backbone of Andreas Scholl's latest recital. The countertenor has gathered his favourite partners around him in the service of this sublime vocal art, elegantly distilling its fragile instants of grace. The songs are adroitly interspersed with instrumental pieces by Dowland's contemporaries.
Bonus DVD: a performance of the Song 'Venus' birds' and a 'beyond the microphones' documentary on the making of this recording.
