[ Ode Records / 2 CD ]
Release Date: Friday 25 May 2012
This was a recording almost ahead of its time - Recorded at the Auckland Town Hall on the 7th August 1950, it was transmitted by phone to the Astor Recording Studio in Shortland St Auckland.
Although originally recorded and issued on 78, this landmark concert was then reissued in 1994 on cassette tape. However the transcript for it was at the wrong speed and the compare sounded as though he was on helium and the instruments were several notes high, so this CD edition is the first time it has been issued to play at the correct speed as recorded!
The line-up is the who's who of the New Zealand jazz scene at the time - Crombie Muroch, Julian Lee, Murray Tanner, Mavis Rivers, George Cambell, Denny O'Brien, Dick Hobday and Mark Kahi, Colin Martin, Dale Alderton, Hughie Gordon, Thompson Yandall and Peter Young as compare.
The tracks are standards but the playing is progressive for the time especially when you hear the compare and the comments made which put it in a context of over 60 years ago. A truly historical landmark document on 2 CDs issued in its original form.
